The Leadership Power of Genuine Connection

Real leadership begins with real relationships

What is the remarkable leadership impact of genuine human connections?

On the USS Carl Vinson, I would occasionally walk into the galley, grab a paper hat, tie on an apron, and step behind the serving line.

“Petty Officer Smith, mind if I help you serve chow?” I’d say.

Side by side, we would serve a hundred sailors in minutes—laughing, joking, and talking like two shipmates just doing the job together.

After a few minutes I’d clap him on the back and move on to the next shop.

And before I was even out of earshot, I’d hear him say to someone nearby:

“That’s my XO, damn.”

That moment always stopped me in my tracks.

It filled me with pride—but it also revealed something deeper about leadership.

Petty Officer Smith didn’t want to disappoint me.

And the last thing I wanted to do was disappoint him.

Somewhere along the way, we had built a bond that went far beyond rank.

Early in my career I assumed my leadership would be judged by my skill as an aviator or by the authority of my position.

But over time I realized something different.

Leadership effectiveness comes from connection, not position.

People don’t follow you because you’re good at your job.

They follow you because of how you make them feel.

I began hearing reports from the crew—comments not meant for me to hear.

“That’s my XO.”

“That’s my Captain.”

They didn’t say it to flatter me. They said it to each other.

And when they said it, there was pride in their voices.

By learning their names, taking an interest in their families, and showing up where they worked, something powerful happened.

We built a connection.

It wasn’t just “I like working for that guy.”

It was deeper.

It sounded more like this:

“I’d walk through fire with that guy.”

“He’s got my back—and I’ve got his.”

That kind of loyalty doesn’t come from authority.

It comes from human connection.

At the deepest level, every human being has a need to matter.

We want to feel valued.

We want to feel seen.

We want to feel that someone cares.

Some people hide that need behind anger or distance. Often that’s because they’ve been hurt before. But the truth is simple: Everyone craves connection.

When leaders show genuine care for people—authentically and consistently—walls begin to come down.

But authenticity matters.

Connection cannot be faked.

People know immediately whether your interest is real or just an act.

If you find yourself wishing you were somewhere else during a conversation with your team,

stop and reset your mindset.

Leadership is not about you.

It’s about them.

When I stepped behind the serving line in the galley, I wasn’t performing a leadership tactic.

I was having fun.

I enjoyed being there. I enjoyed being with the crew. I enjoyed showing them that no job on the ship was beneath the XO.

That authenticity made the connection real.

I carry the same mindset today in my executive leadership role.

I want people to feel something simple when they’re around me:

“I like being with this team.”

That feeling creates belonging.

And belonging creates loyalty.

When someone says, “That’s my Captain,” what they are really saying is something powerful:

“I belong to him—and he belongs to us.”

That kind of bond transforms teams.

Here’s what genuine connection produces:

• Trust grows quickly.
• Communication becomes more open.
• Collaboration improves.
• Morale and engagement increase.
• Loyalty strengthens across the team.

Connection creates the environment where people do their best work—and where teams become stronger together.

Here’s the bottom line:

Leadership is built on authentic human connection.

When you genuinely care about people, listen to them, and enjoy being around them, they feel valued.

And when people feel valued, they give you their best.

Connection turns coworkers into teammates.

And teammates into something much stronger.
