You can’t get those moments back.
Seek Work-Life Balance
“What does real balance look like?”
Let me show you.
We were driving from Escondido to North Island.
Thirty minutes.
No one said a word.
Not me.
Not Kelly.
Not the kids.
They knew.
I was leaving again.
We pulled up to the pier. The ship was waiting.
Megan was eight years old.
She wouldn’t look at me. Wouldn’t hug me.
That hurt more than anything.
There’s a rule when you walk to the ship.
You don’t look back.
Kelly would drive away immediately. No waving. No lingering.
Everyone just wants to get past it.
During workups, it gets even harder.
After repeated comings and goings, Kelly finally said—
“I wish you would just go. Then I can get used to you being gone.”
I deployed fifteen times in my career.
Six months or more.
I spent over eight years at sea.
I was gone for half of our married life.
And here’s the truth—
I loved what I was doing.
I was growing.
Promotions.
Command track.
I was on the path.
And Kelly?
She held it all together.
She raised our kids.
She carried the load.
She was—and still is—my anchor.
But over time, something changed.
I started to see it.
You can’t “balance” when you’re gone.
But when you’re home…
You better get it right.
I missed Megan’s entire senior year of high school.
Every game.
Every moment.
Except graduation.
You don’t get that back.
Here’s What I Learned
Work-life balance isn’t about splitting time evenly.
It’s about being fully present—where you are.
When you’re at work—lead.
When you’re home—be there.
Not halfway.
All in.
What Leaders Do Differently
As I got more senior, I changed how I led.
When we were ashore, I told my people:
Go home.
Be at the birthday.
Go to the game.
Show up for the school meeting.
Coach your kid’s team.
Because when we deploy – You’re gone.
So be there for your family now. While we’re at home.
I didn’t just say it.
I modeled it.
My team knew—
If it mattered at home, it mattered.
The Mistake Leaders Make
They let work bleed into everything.
Late nights.
Unnecessary meetings.
Keeping people just to “look busy” and committed.
That’s not leadership.
That’s insecurity.
Leadership Reality
You will ask people to sacrifice.
But only when it’s necessary.
Not because you can.
Not because it’s easier.
Leadership is service.
Not privilege.

them while chasing your career dreams.” — Brian Dyson
The Question
When your career is over – What will your family say about how you showed up?
